Meet Our Wish Kids

Simon was only four years old when he was receiving arduous treatment for advanced neuroblastoma, an aggressive cancer. Simon’s morale was plummeting and the only thing that sparked his interest was watching NASCAR races on television. He claimed his ultimate wish was to start a race by announcing those famous words, “Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!” At this point his parents realized their son had a dream that neither their love nor resources could fulfill. That’s when the Make-A-Wish Foundation became part of their world. On October 10, 1999, Simon was standing on the racetrack with his face aglow from excitement. In a clear, strong voice, Simon loudly yelled, Gentlemen!!! START…YOUR…ENGINES!!! At that precise moment, over 100,000 fans erupted with applause, and the racetrack was filled with the thunder of 43 of the fastest cars in the world simultaneously starting their engines. Today, Simon remains in remission. His parents want everyone to know that the Make-A-Wish Foundation made Simon’s dream come true and gave him joyous memories and a sense that, despite its ills, the world is a wondrous place.

that there are more than 700 volunteers involved in virtually every aspect of the Foundation's operations, from wish granting to office operations, from fund raising to speaking engagements.
